Commission Guernut

A collection of household budgets from across Afrique occidentale francaise (contemporary Senegal, Mauritania, Côte d’Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Benin, Guinea, and Niger), Togo, Madagascar, French Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos) and New Caledonia from the 1930s. I use these budgets to analyse the effect of the cash crop boom on rural household consumption in a working paper, “The fruits of the boom: consumption, inequality and cash crops in the French Empire”.
