My paper on the real wage and living standards in colonial Dakar is out at the European Review of Economic History. This one took a lot of archival digging in the Archives nationales du Sénégal, because there is no single source of wages and prices for French colonies as there is for the British colonies with the Blue Books. In compensation, I do have a considerable amount of information (given the limitations) on housing costs, which I argue were a major component of expenditure and one that deserves more attention in real wage studies in Africa.
